Tax Filing Extension Requests

Even though the deadline for filing taxes is more or less the same every year, it always seems to sneak up on us out of nowhere. Suddenly it’s April 1^st and you haven’t even looked at any of your tax preparation paperwork. You also don’t remember where you stored those W-2s and 1099s for safekeeping. There’s just no way you’ll be ready by April 15^th (or the first business day after if April 15^th fell on a weekend or a holiday).

Individual Tax Filing Extension Deadlines 

April 15^th is about to come and go. What should you do? Call us to request an extension on the filing deadline. Your new tax filing deadline will be October 15^th unless the 15^th falls on a weekend or a holiday. If it does, the filing deadline is the first business day after October 15^th. 

Corporate Tax Filing Extension Deadlines

If you think you’re going to miss the deadline for your business taxes, you can file an extension for that as well. C corporations have the same deadlines as individuals, so the extended deadline is also October 15^th, unless the corporation’s tax year differs from the calendar year. For partnerships and S corporations, the extended deadline is September 15^th.

When You Have to Pay Your Taxes 

If you’ve called us and filed your extension, you may think you’re off the hook for paying your taxes until the new deadline. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. The IRS expects you to pay your taxes by the April 15^th deadline through tax withholding for your paycheck or quarterly estimated tax payments. If you wait to pay your taxes until the extended deadline, you could be subject to penalties and interest.
